Mitjançant la seva distribució de drets i obligacions legals, el dret de família compromet l’Estat en la regulació jurídica de les relacions personals. Com es pot justificar aquesta forma de regulació? En la meva recerca intento respondre aquesta pregunta establint les limitacions morals a la regulació estatal de les relacions personals. Per tant, intento determinar les circumstàncies en què és moralment admissible i moralment obligatori que l’Estat participi en la regulació de les relacions personals, els propòsits per als quals l’Estat pot o ha de participar en aquesta regulació i els mitjans pels quals l’Estat pot o ha de perseguir aquests propòsits. D’aquesta manera, espero dotar el dret de família de fonaments normatius coherents, sobre els quals es puguin construir sistemes de regulació jurídica particulars

“Through its distribution of legal rights and obligations, family law engages the State in the legal regulation of personal relationships. How, if at all, can this form of regulation be justified? In my research I attempt to answer this question by establishing the moral constraints on State regulation of personal relationships. I therefore seek to determine the circumstances in which it is morally permissible and morally obligatory for the State to engage in the regulation of personal relationships, the purposes for which the State may or must engage in such regulation, and the means by which the State may or must pursue those purposes. By doing so I hope to provide family law with cohernent normative foundations, upon which particular systems of legal regulation can then be constructed”
