La competència cultural de les infermeres d’atenció primària envers la comunitat gitana: projecte de recerca

Background: One of the world’s most disadvantaged minority groups is the Roma. This group presents a worse state of health than the rest of the population and suffers the one identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "health inequalities". The health of the Romany population is also negatively affected by certain cultural factors. The prejudices and social exclusion they experience can influence super health care. Nurses are ideally placed to actively contribute to addressing health inequities. Culturally competent nursing care would provide high quality care in culturally diverse settings. Objectives: To analyze the perception and experience of the cultural competence of the gypsy community, served in the primary health care of the Girona Health Region, and that of the nursing professionals who serve them. Design: Qualitative study of phenomenological type. Participants: Two groups of participants: Primary Care nurses from the cities of Girona and Figueres, and the gypsy population living in these two cities. Methods: Collection of information obtained through participant observation, discussion groups and semi-structured interviews with recording and subsequent analysis of content. Applicability of the results: The results obtained in this study will contribute to know the perceptions of the gypsy collective of Girona with respect to the attention received, in terms of cultural competence on the part of the nursing staff in primary health attention and may contribute to the establishment of actions aimed at promoting health care from a cross-cultural perspective.
