Crítica sobre el problema del origen cultural del pueblo romaní

A qué nos referimos al hablar de proto-rroms? Es que acaso hay un punto de inflexión a partir del cual podemos empezar a considerar a los núcleos de población nómada salidos el Punjab como romaníes? Es decir, podemos encontrar algún momento concreto al que dirigirnos para establecer el nacimiento de la conciencia identitaria y de pertenencia étnica? Y de ser así, forma parte de esta identidad el factor del nomadismo? En qué medida? Porque teniendo en cuenta que a día de hoy no es más del 5% de la población romaní que continúa llevando una vida itinerante, podría ser aceptada la afirmación que sólo el 5% de la población romaní es auténticamente romaní? O es que acaso debemos reformular los factores culturales que configuran esta identidad cultural para dar cuenta de cómo a través del tiempo el nomadismo ha desaparecido dando paso a una nueva identidad? Y en base a esta, que tienen de romaníes estos “proto-romaníes”?

What do we mean when we speak of proto-rroms? Is there perhaps a turning point from which we can begin to consider the nomadic population centers that came out of the Punjab as Roma? In other words, can we find a specific moment to turn to to establish the birth of identity and ethnicity? And if so, is the nomadism factor part of this identity? What extent? Because considering that today there are no more than 5% of the Roma population that continues to lead an itinerant life, could the statement that only 5% of the Roma population is truly Roma be accepted? Or is it that we should reformulate the cultural factors that make up this cultural identity to account for how nomadism has disappeared over time, giving way to a new identity? And based on this, what do these "proto-Roma" have about Roma?
