Young people without family references on the territory, have arrived to Catalan lands, in search of new opportunities and a possible future. However something has gone awry during they reception process. Into the city of Girona, almost 40 of this young people, belonging to this group, have been poorly living on the streets. What chances do they have within the minor protection system, and what contingencies do they have to face? Have the different educational agents involved, been up to the task of ensuring the inclusion of these young people? In the following essay, through a qualitative methodology and combining interviews with those youngsters, education agents, and members of different associations linked to young people, we analyze the incidence of community participation and the opportunities it can provide to them. Through the results, it’s made clear the labeling they carry and the barriers it creates. It also shows the correlation between these difficulties and the shortcomings towards the needs of security, affiliation and recognition among others. On the contrary, this results manifest the possibility of breaking with the negative connotation associated with them, using a powerful tool as the community involvement. Furthermore, it shows the opportunities and benefits that participating and being involved in the community they live can bring to them. To conclude, a highly noticeable aspect, is the evidence that community involvement appeals and it’s a responsibility not only of young people, but also society and of course, the social education field.
