Girona a l’edat mitjana: l’urbanisme

Girona remained confined within its walls until the creation of the episcopal set of buildings of Sant Feliu [Saint Felix] near the northern gateway of the city. The Carolingians rebuilt the walls and widened the enclosure to the north. In the 11th century, the borough of Sant Feliu was formed followed, in the 12th century, by the southern extension, especially that of Areny and its marketplace. In the 13th century, the village of Sant Pere and Mercadal were incorporated into the urban process. This growth led to densification until the middle of the 14th cent ur y, with numerous establishments. In the second half of the 14th century, the city stopped growing, although a new walled enclosure was still built

Girona es va mantenir reclosa dins les muralles fins a la creació del conjunt episcopal de Sant Feliu vora la porta nord de la ciutat. Els carolingis reconstruïen les muralles i eixamplaven el recinte cap el nord. Al segle XI es formava el burg de Sant Feliu i al XII l’eixample meridional, especialment l’Areny i el seu mercat. Al segle XIII s’incorporarien al procés urbà el burg de Sant Pere i el Mercadal. El creixement es densificaria fins a mitjan segle XIV amb nombrosos establiments. A la segona meitat del segle XIV, la ciutat s’estancava però encara va construir un nou recinte emmurallat
