Programa de educación para la salud a los cuidadores principales de personas con Alzheimer: proyecto de investigación

At the moment, dementia affects about 50 million people worldwide, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, accounting for between 60% and 70% of cases. This disease not only affects people with AD, but also their main caregivers, thus developing an overload that triggers physical and psychological problems. For this reason, there are various education programs where skills and strategies are worked on in order to help cope with and minimize this overload. Objectives: General objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a health education program for the main caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s. Specific objectives: 1) To study the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of Alzheimer’s patients participating in the study. 2) To study the socio-demographic characteristics of the participating caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. 3) To describe the knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease and the care of the caregivers before and after the application of the program. 4) To identify the level of overload of the main caregiver before and after the program. 5) To study the quality of life perceived by Alzheimer’s caregivers before and after the program. Methodology It is an almost experimental design that will be carried out between the months of April and May 2022. The study population is the main caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s who attend the CAP in Can Gibert del Pla, where the sample will be chosen from a non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Socio- demographic variables of the affected person and the caregiver, clinical variables related to the disease, and in the caregiver’s knowledge about this disease, caregiver burden using the Zarit scale and quality of life using Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s disease (QOL-AD) will be studied to patients and caregivers. The caregiver program consists of teaching patient care strategies and providing information on how to bear the burden of the caregiver. The study will respect the ethical principles of research in people. The data will be statistically analyzed with the SPSS 25.0 program. The results of the study will allow us to know the effectiveness of the program in terms of knowledge and skills, including whether the burden of the main caregiver decreases, and consequently, if it helps to improve the quality of life of the person with AD

Actualmente, la demencia afecta a unos 50 millones de personas a nivel mundial, y la enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA) es la forma más frecuente de demencia, estimándose entre un 60% y un 70% de los casos. Esta enfermedad no solo afecta a las personas con EA, sino que también a sus cuidadores principales, desarrollando así una sobrecarga que desencadena problemas físicos y psicológicos. Por ello, existen diversos programas de educación donde se trabajan las habilidades y estrategias con el fin de ayudar a sobrellevar y minimizar esta sobrecarga. Objetivos Objetivo general: Evaluar la eficacia de un programa de educación para salud a los cuidadores principales de personas con Alzheimer. Objetivos específicos: 1) Estudiar las características sociodemográficas y clínicas de los enfermos de Alzheimer que participen en el estudio. 2) Estudiar las características sociodemográficas de los cuidadores participantes de los enfermos de Alzheimer. 3) Describir los conocimientos sobre la enfermedad de Alzheimer y los cuidados de los cuidadores antes y después de la aplicación del programa. 4) Identificar el nivel de sobrecarga del cuidador/a principal antes y después del programa. 5) Estudiar la calidad de vida percibida por los cuidadores de Alzheimer antes y después del programa. Metodología Se trata de un diseño casi-experimental que se llevará a cabo entre los meses de abril y mayo de 2022. La población de estudio son los cuidadores principales de las personas con Alzheimer que acudan al CAP de Can Gibert del Pla, donde la muestra será escogida a partir de un muestreo no probabilístico de conveniencia. Se estudiaran variables sociodemográficas de la persona afectada y del cuidador, variables clínicas relacionadas con la enfermedad, y en los cuidadores los conocimientos sobre esta enfermedad, carga del cuidador mediante la escala de Zarit y calidad de vida mediante Quality of Life in Alzheimer`s Disease Scale (QOL-AD) a los pacientes y cuidadores. El programa a los cuidadores consiste en enseñar estrategias del cuidado del paciente y dar información sobre cómo mitigar la carga del cuidador. El estudio respetará los principios éticos de investigación en personas. Los datos serán analizados estadísticamente con el programa SPSS 25.0. Los resultados del estudio permitirán conocer la eficacia del programa en cuanto a los conocimientos y habilidades, incluso saber si la sobrecarga del cuidador principal disminuye, y en consecuencia, si ayuda a que mejore la calidad de vida de la persona con EA
