L’expansió urbanística del Poble-sec de Barcelona. El cas dels molers de les pedreres de Montjuïc

The community feeling associated to belonging to a neighbourhood is essential in our life quality. These emotions represent the relationship between the individual and the city. In this sense, this doctoral thesis analyzes the social, political, and economic environment of the “Poble-sec” neighbourhood, placed at the foot of the “Montjuïc” Mountain, in the area of Barcelona. The thesis establishes the actual condition of this neighbourhood and identifies the determinants and decisive aspects that led to the urbanistic development of different areas: “Les Hortes de Sant Bertran” (a maritime sector); “Santa Madrona” and “La Satalia” (central sectors); and “La França” (west sector). All of the areas have something in common, the coincidence of the neighbourhood development, around the middle of the s. XIX. In this thesis, the urban development transformation of the “Poble-sec” neighbourhood has been explored. It has been done from the individual and correlated analysis of the different sectors of the neighbourhood, taking into account the different factors that have influenced the individual character of the sectors and their origins which have been representatives as the “molers”, workers from the quarries, represented in the pathway, the cross and the house of the “molers”

La identitat, associada al sentiment de pertinença a un barri, és un aspecte fonamental per a la qualitat de vida; representativa de la relació individu/ciutat. En aquest context, la tesi doctoral, porta a terme l’anàlisi social, polític i econòmic del moment, cercant en la conjunció de tots els factors immersos, la resposta al desenvolupament urbanístic experimentat en el barri del Poble-sec de Barcelona, en l’àmbit precís dels sectors que el conformen, cadascun d’ells amb la seva pròpia identitat: les Hortes de sant Bertran (sector més marítim), Santa Madrona i La Satalia (sectors centrals), i La França (sector més ponentí). Tots ells tenen en comú la coincidència en el temps, de l’inici del desenvolupament urbanístic, principis de la segona meitat del s.XIX, establint com a data de referencia l’any 1869 amb motiu de la desaparició de les zones polèmiques militars. Des de la complexitat que va acompanyar a la transformació urbanística del Poble-sec, s’ha procedit a recuperar el seu creixement urbanístic a través del desenvolupament de tots i cadascun dels diferents sectors del barri, establint una visió de conjunt i, alhora a través també de la incidència que en aquests procés van tenir un dels actors amb personalitat pròpia que, des dels seus orígens va acompanyar al creixement urbanístic d’aquests terrenys, els molers, treballadors nouvinguts de les pedreres de Montjuïc, representats pel camí, la creu i la casa dels molers
