As indicated by Palomar (2007), beyond being a biological fact, motherhood is also a social construction located in a specific historical-cultural context, composed of particular discourses and practices have a meaning in that specific context. Both the discourses and the practices surrounding motherhood determine the way in which pregnancy, childbirth and the education of sons and daughters are constructed and experienced. What happens when the transition to maternity takes place in a migratory context? This research aimed to answer this question based on knowing the maternity experience of six women of Latin American origin who first became mothers in Catalonia. In-depth interviews with the women participating in this research allowed to gather valuable information to determine that there is a homogenizing and racializing discourse towards immigrant women that does not take into account their migratory project and that hinders their relations with health personnel, as well as with the host society; At the same time, this discourse reflects the strategies they use to live the transition to motherhood, rebuild their social networks and make sense of the experience of motherhood in this new context.

Como lo indica Palomar (2007), más allá de ser un hecho biológico, la maternidad es también una construcción social localizada en un contexto histórico-cultural determinado, compuesta por discursos y prácticas que son particulares y que tienen un significado en ese determinado contexto. Tanto los discursos como las prácticas que rodean a la maternidad determinan la manera en que se construye y experimenta el embarazo, el parto y la educación de los hijos e hijas. ¿Qué pasa cuando el tránsito a la primera maternidad se da en un contexto migratorio? La presente investigación se propuso responder a esta pregunta a partir de conocer la experiencia de maternidad de seis mujeres de origen latinoamericano que se convirtieron por primera vez en madres en Cataluña. Las entrevistas a profundidad con las mujeres participantes en esta investigación permitieron reunir información valiosa para determinar que existe un discurso homogenizador y racializador hacia las mujeres inmigrantes que no toma en cuenta su proyecto migratorio y que dificulta sus relaciones con el personal sanitario, así como con la sociedad de acogida; al mismo tiempo este discurso recoge las estrategias que ellas utilizan para vivir el tránsito a la maternidad, reconstruir sus redes sociales y dar sentido a la experiencia de la maternidad en este nuevo contexto.
