Durant els darrers anys, el mercat de les rodes ha augmentat de manera progressiva i constant. Principalment, s’utilitzen en vehicles de motor (com cotxes o motocicletes), així com l’existència d’un mercat ampli en vehicles de propulsió humana (com és el cas de les bicicletes). Dins aquest mercat, els pneumàtics han millorat respectivament amb la utilització de nous materials i formes, però la tecnologia ha sigut la mateixa: una peça en forma de torus feta de cautxú, la qual envolta la cambra interior formada per aire a pressió, que permet un esmorteïment amb el terra, però mantenint la forma rodona per seguir rodant
