The double cantilever beam (DCB) and end-notched flexure (ENF) tests are the standard ones for determining the interlaminar fracture toughness of composites in opening and shearing, respectively. The same tests are commonly used to characterize the mode I and mode II interfacial fracture of adhesive joints. Apart from these classical material cases, there is a growing interest recently in determining the fracture toughness of, for instance, asymmetrically delaminated composites or dissimilar adhesive joints. For this purpose, laboratory coupons are being used that feature a material or thickness asymmetry with respect to the crack plane. This asymmetry introduces mixed-mode I/II fracture to the specimen, even if the same is loaded in pure mode I or pure mode II | |
