Revisió dels estudis genètics de la llisa blanca (Mugil curema)

Mugil curema, also known as the white mullet is a coastal fish distributed along the coasts of the eastern Pacific, the eastern Atlantic and western Atlantic. Economically, the white mullet is a fish of great value, since it is fished in most of the areas where it lives. For this reason, it is important to study genetically the species in order to manage and maintain stable its populations. Genetically, Mugil curema is identified as a complex of cryptic species, that is to say that morphologically it is difficult to differentiate them, but they can be identified molecularly using various methods and markers. Using the WOS database and the terms "Mugil curema" and "genet*" have been used and articles from the last ten years have been filtered. A total of 30 articles were found, 11 relevant ones were selected and classified according to the genetic method or marker used: mitochondrial DNA, Cytogenetics, Microsatellites and SNPs methods. Articles made with mitochondrial DNA made use of markers such as 16S rDNA, COI or Cyt b. Most of the articles have obtained results consistent with the classification of the complex already known, although some groupings vary according to the article. Despite this, it would be necessary to develop studies in the other localities where M. curema lives. Cytogenetics makes it possible to identify the individuals of the complex, but it has been found that the karyotype of two species of this complex has not yet been carried out. Another study in polluted estuaries indicates the danger of human action in the degradation of the genome of animals and points out that measures must be taken. The studies with microsatellites focused on the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Pacific, and several genetic groups have been found within it. More studies would be necessary to identify which species these groups correspond to and expand the study areas. Finally, studies using SNPs have not detected the same groups in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Pacific, contradicting the results obtained by other molecular markers. In addition, a possible other new cryptic species has been found. It is concluded that more studies should be carried out in the area to corroborate the results
