Introduction: The present work analyzes the lived experience of a child who suffered from meningococcal sepsis in 1981.
Objectives: The main objective is to analyze how the role of the nurse impacted the hospital experience of the family and the child. More specifically, the aim is to contextualize nursing and the illness, analyze the experience of the patient and her father, and evaluate the evolution of nursing in the years following the experience.
Methodology: First, the situation of nursing during the years when the experience took place is presented, and the illness is contextualized. Then, the patient’s experience is analyzed qualitatively through two sources: the father’s written journal and the patient’s oral testimony. The information is then classified into themes and subthemes for further analysis.
Results: The results show that factors such as the physical environment or the family’s socioeconomic context are relevant in the hospital experience; however, factors such as the creation of a therapeutic bond and the strong involvement of the nurses are equally significant.
Discussion: The discussion reflects on how the different aspects presented in the results influenced the experience and how they affected the lived experience. In this case, the importance of having a close environment, stable family support, a positive mindset, good financial resources, and, above all, the support of the nursing team is highlighted.
Conclusions: The conclusions emphasize that the involvement of nurses had a significant impact on the lived experience and that the profession, thanks to the involvement of professionals, has evolved positively.
Implications for the nursing discipline: The analyzed experience reaffirms the values that nursing is based on: autonomy, intimacy, confidentiality, social justice, and professional commitment. At the same time, it reflects on how these values have evolved over the years from Angel’s perspective and reiterates their positive development 1 2 3 5 10 |
