El mercat de la terra a la Catalunya baix medieval. La vall d’Amer (1350-1399)

ENG- This thesis aims to study the characteristics and evolution of the land market in the Catalan territory during the XIV century through the case of Amer Valley, an space inhabited by peasants, who resided in the typical unit of exploitation in the so called Old Catalonia –the masos–, and by artisans and merchants as well, those residing in a small urban center; a village-market with its notary, from which exceptional notarial records have been preserved to this day. This investigation utilizes a sample of almost a thousand documents, in a span from the 1350s –after the Black Death– to the year 1399, and concerning land transactions —sells of land, establishments, lease contracts and exchanges of land— or to the socioeconomic live of the valley’s residents –marriage contracts, inheritances, inter-vivos donations, wills and credit or violaris contracts–. Our objective will be, in the first place, and after an introductory section, to put the landscape, demography and institutional organization of the valley in context. The third section of the thesis will explain the movement of the market during the studies period, identifying the processes of growth and decrease in its activity, and the influence that the great mortality caused by the pandemic had on said activity. We will examine the people who participated in these operations; we will appraise if the reasons behind the agreement for prices can be discerned, and we will compare the number of sales of land with other instruments of transmission of the land. The fourth and last section will revolve around families and their relationship with land, at the same time studying the economic capacities of the residents of Amer and the socioeconomic inequality in the valley

CAT- Aquesta tesi té com a objectiu estudiar les característiques i l’evolució del mercat de la terra al territori rural català del segle XIV, mitjançant el cas de la vall d’Amer, un espai habitat tant per pagesos que residien en les unitats d’explotació rural paradigmàtiques de l’anomenada Catalunya Vella –els masos–, com per artesans i comerciants, que ocupaven el seu petit nucli urbà; una vila-mercat amb notaria pròpia, de la qual s’han conservat uns excepcionals llibres de protocols. La investigació es recolza en una mostra de gairebé un miler dels seus instruments notarials, dins un marc cronològic que comprèn dels anys 1350 –després de l’adveniment de la Pesta Negra– a l’any 1399, i referents a la transacció de la terra –compravendes, establiments, contractes a llauró i permutes– o a la vida econòmica i social dels habitants de la vall –contractes matrimonials, heretaments, donacions inter-vivos, testaments i contractes de crèdit o violaris–. Es voldrà, en primer lloc, i després d’una secció introductòria, contextualitzar el paisatge, demografia i organització institucional de la vall. El tercer apartat buscarà dilucidar els moviments del mercat al llarg del període, identificant els seus processos de creixement i decreixement, i la influència tingué la gran mortalitat causada per l’epidèmia en aquesta activitat. També s’examinaran els agents que van participar de les operacions; es valorarà si es poden concretar les raons rere la fixació de preus de les parcel·les, i es compararà la freqüència amb la que es pactaren els contractes de compravenda amb relació a altres formes de transmissió del domini útil de la propietat. El quart i últim apartat girarà entorn la família i la seva relació amb la terra, al mateix temps que s’estudien les capacitats econòmiques dels residents d’Amer i la desigualtat socioeconòmica en l’interior de la vall
