El Portal Nou : Rehabilitació de l’espai entre la muralla i el carrer Portal Nou

El projecte sorgeix de l’anàlisi del Barri Vell des d’una de les seves vores, la muralla. Resseguint aquest límit, destaca una zona on el verd de fora muralla no travessa a l’interior i on els edificis s’apropen dràsticament a la muralla. Aquest punt coincideix amb el Portal Nou, una obertura a la muralla que es va obrir l’any 1917 per facilitar l’entrada de materials a una obra de rehabilitació del Barri Vell. Aquest nou portal era diferent de tots els altres, ja no tenia portes i guardes vigilant l’accés, simplement servia per facilitar la comunicació del centre urbà amb el seu entorn. Però, amb els anys, l’afluència de gent per aquest carrer ha anat disminuint, a la vegada que molts equipaments que albergava han anat desapareixent. El treball neix amb la intenció de reactivar la vida entorn d’aquest portal i carrer a partir de la intervenció en els tres edificis adjacents; la residència Maria Gay, el centre UNED amb el buit de la sala del cinema Truffaut i l’edifici d’habitatges de protecció oficial. Els objectius del treball són augmentar la distància entre la muralla i els edificis existents, introduir el verd a aquesta zona del Barri Vell, crear una nova façana per aquesta plaça i aportar un nou programa més cooperatiu i intergeneracional que activi aquesta zona del barri.

The project arises from the analysis of the Old Quarter, viewed from one of its edges: the city wall. Following this boundary, one area stands out where the greenery outside the wall does not extend inward, and where the buildings press dramatically close to the wall. This point coincides with the Portal Nou, an opening in the wall created in 1917 to facilitate the entry of materials for a rehabilitation project in the Old Quarter. Unlike the other gates, this new portal had no doors and no guards controlling access; it simply served to connect the urban center with its surroundings. Over the years, however, the flow of people along this street has steadily declined, and many of the facilities it once housed have gradually disappeared. This work is born from the intention of reactivating life around this portal and street by intervening in the three adjacent buildings: the Maria Gay residence, the UNED center with the vacant Truffaut cinema hall, and the social housing block. The goals of the project are to increase the distance between the wall and the existing buildings, to bring greenery into this part of the Old Quarter, to create a new façade for this square, and to introduce a new, more cooperative and intergenerational program that reactivates this area of the neighborhood.
