How witnessing intimate partner violence affects a child’s mental health. Systematic review (2014-2024)

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is still a common occurrence. There’s been much investigation about how it affects women as direct victims, but a gap has been found in investigations about its effects on children who witness IPV at their homes. The current study presents a revision of articles with the objective of presenting emotional, social, behavioral, physical, and cognitive changes, as well as other impacts that might be produced by witnessing IPV and its negative influence on building a statement about violence. In order to develop this investigation, the PRISMA methodology was used. The time period of selected articles was ten years, 2014–2024. It took a lot of years and work to understand how sexist violence affects women and leave behind the process of psychopathologization. Because of that, it’s necessary to focus on understanding the damage caused during childhood to be able to detect it and take action. Witnessing IPV is seen as a risk factor for many disorders as well.

La violencia en las relaciones afectivo-sexuales de pareja continúa constituyendo un suceso común. Hay muchas investigaciones sobre sus afectos en las mujeres como víctimas directas pero aún nos encontramos con la falta de la investigación sobre sus afectos en los niños como testigos de la violencia en sus hogares. El objetivo de la presente revisión sistemática es presentar los efectos que tiene vivir la violencia de pareja íntima como testigo en el nivel emocional, social, comportamental, físico y cognitivo, conjuntamente con otros impactos que puede tener y la construcción de la opinión sobre la violencia. Para poder proceder a esta investigación, su metodología se basó en la metodología PRISMA. El periodo de tiempo de los artículos incluidos fue los últimos diez años, 2014-2024. Se han necesitado muchos años y trabajos para entender cómo se manifiesta el impacto de la violencia machista en las mujeres y salir de su psicopatologización; por esta razón, es urgente dirigir la mirada a la comprensión de los daños causados en la infancia, para poder detectarlos y actuar. Vivir la violencia íntima como testigo puede ser un factor de riesgo de trastornos psicológicos.
