Wastewater treatment in the wine industry is an environmental challenge that requires efficient
and sustainable solutions. This study analyzed the operation of the wastewater treatment
system at Celler La Vinyeta, composed of an up-flow hydrolytic reactor (HUSB) and a
horizontal subsurface flow treatment wetland, with the aim of evaluating its capacity for water
reuse in irrigation and its compliance with European regulations on wastewater treatment
(Royal decree 1085/2024, of October 22).
Through the monitoring of various physicochemical and microbiological parameters, the study
confirmed that the system was capable of significantly reducing the organic and microbiological
load of wastewater. The hydrolytic reactor, despite exhibiting some remobilization of organic
compounds, played a crucial role in retaining suspended solids (46,37%) and reducing bacteria
(2,12 log10 CFU/100 ml). Meanwhile, the wetland achieved deep purification through its natural
processes of oxidation, sedimentation, and assimilation by biomass, effectively reducing COD
(84,32%), BOD5 (86,24%), and total suspended solids (68%).
However, the study also highlighted certain limitations. Despite the good results in contaminant
reduction, nitrogen levels (39,95 mg/L) remained above regulatory limits (10 mg/L), which
could hinder the agricultural reuse of the effluent. Additionally, the analysis of the reactor sludge
indicated excessive compaction in the lower layers, which could hinder water recirculation and
lead to the concentration of ions in the remaining liquid.
To enhance the system, adjustments to retention times, the implementation of additional
nitrification and denitrification processes, and a more efficient sludge management approach
were proposed. This research contributed to the development of more sustainable wastewater
treatment models in the wine industry, demonstrating that the combination of natural and
conventional technologies could be a viable solution for efficient wastewater management 6 |
