Viabilitat de la implantació de compostadors comunitaris als barris que realitzen la recollida selectiva porta a porta a la ciutat de Girona

This project analyses the feasibility of implementing community composters in neighbourhoods of Girona where door-to-door waste collection is carried out. Through a multidimensional methodology combining technical, logistical, economic, regulatory and social analysis, the potential to manage part of the organic fraction using 1 m³ community composters was evaluated. The project considers different deployment scenarios and estimates the potential treatment capacity, space requirements, and the economic, environmental and social implications of each scenario. Results show that up to 18.6% of the organic fraction generated in the selected neighbourhoods could be treated through community composting. Installation and maintenance costs were estimated according to the number of composters, with scenarios ranging from 39,000 € to 780,000 €, depending on the level of citizen and technical involvement. A participatory survey was carried out among local residents and several neighbourhood associations were contacted, revealing a growing interest in this type of initiative and the need for proper technical support and awareness-raising to ensure long-term success. The project also takes into account current waste legislation and the guidelines of the National Organic Waste Management Plan to ensure alignment with strategic sustainability and circular economy objectives. The analysis of real-life cases (such as Barcelona, Pontevedra, Vic or Viladecans) shows that community composting can become an effective tool to reduce waste generation, promote citizen responsibility, and foster decentralised management models that are more sustainable and adapted to local needs. Based on all the information gathered, the project proposes three approaches for implementation: environmental, social and hybrid. The hybrid model is presented as the most suitable for Girona, as it combines environmental efficiency, social cohesion and economic viability. This proposal would complement the current selective collection system, promote the circular economy, and actively involve citizens in managing their own waste
