Anàlisi de l’ús de l’aigua regenerada com a alternativa de font de subministrament davant les sequeres persistent al Baix Ter

This study analyzes the feasibility of implementing an aquifer recharge system in the Baix Ter area using the effluent water from various wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To this end, a point-based system has been designed by defining various criteria related to both external factors to the aquifers to be recharged and internal factors within them. Due to climate change, Catalonia has experienced an emergency drought situation, declared as a result of historically low reservoir levels, which has intensified the overexploitation of aquifers. This situation has driven the need to seek non-conventional water sources, including the use of water from desalination plants or WWTPs. This water resource can be used to recharge aquifers and maintain the integrity of the ecosystems that depend on them, as well as serve as a supply source for populations. Artificial aquifer recharge systems are the means to achieve this goal, and they are increasingly studied and used, especially in locations facing water quality or quantity issues in their aquifers. There are many methodologies and recharge techniques depending on the specific needs of each region. Using the effluent water from the WWTPs as a source for this recharge, three different scenarios have been described and relevant criteria have been applied to determine the feasibility of implementing an artificial aquifer recharge system within a 1,000-meter radius of the WWTPs in 10 towns: Begur, L’Escala, La Bisbal d’Empordà, Pals, Parlavà, Peratallada, Rupià, Serra de Daró, Torroella de Montgrí, and Ullastret. The results indicate a high feasibility for implementing a surface or subsurface recharge system in the unconfined aquifer of the municipalities of La Bisbal d’Empordà and Peratallada, and medium feasibility in the rest of the municipalities. Regarding the recharge of the confined aquifer, although its greater extension allows for more potential recharge zones, feasibility is mostly medium and even low in some locations
