El cuerpo y la cruz como instrumentos musicales : iconografía y literatura a la sombra de San Agustín

A partir de un cuadro anónimo mexicano del siglo XVII que representa a Cristo niño en ademán de tañer la cruz transformada en instrumento musical, se exploran las bases teológicas que han permitido establecer un paralelismo entre la cruz y el cuerpo mismo de Cristo, por una parte, y diferentes instrumentos musicales, por otra. Los comentarios a los Salmos de San Agustín son cruciales en este proceso de identificación alegórica, especialmente por las diferencias morfológicas que establece entre la cítara y el salterio, diferencias que se intentan esclarecer en el presente trabajo. Se ofrecen testimonios literarios e iconográficos de los siglos XVI y XVII que reelaboran el complejo alegórico descrito y que lo extienden al cuerpo humano entendido como microcosmos musical; entre ellos, un poema de Gaspar Aguilar que presenta a la vihuela como alegoría de la Virgen María

After an anonymous Mexican painting from the 17th-century showing Christ as a child playing the Cross transformed into a musical instrument, theological basis are explored as a means to establish a parallelism between the Cross and Christ’s own body, on one hand, and different musical instruments, on the other. Saint Augustine’s commentaries to the Psalms are crucial for this allegorical identification, specially though the morphological differences featured by zither and psaltery, which are intended to be clarified in this paper. Several literary and iconographical testimonies from the 16th and 17th-centuries are offered which reelaborate the allegorical complex mentioned above and that expand into the human body seen as a musical microcosm; among them, a poem by Gaspar depicting a vihuela as an Allegory of the Holy Virgen
