La teràpia de pressió negativa és un sistema de cicatrització que utilitza una pressió negativa localitzada i controlada per estimular el tancament de ferides que per si soles no tanquen espontàniament. Una de les seves indicacions és el seu ús en ferides toràciques. L’esternotomia mitja és la incisió més comunament utilitzada en cirurgia cardiotoràcia. Les complicacions considerades més serioses després d’una esternotomia són la dehiscència i la infecció profunda de la ferida esternal postoperatòria o mediastinitis. La teràpia de pressió negativa s’ha convertit en una modalitat de tractament encoratjadora per al tractament d’aquestes complicacions de les ferides esternals

Negative pressure wound therapy is a system of healing that uses a controlled and localized negative pressure to stimulate the healing of the wounds that by themselves will not close spontaneously. One of its indications is the use in thoracic injuries. Median sternotomy is the most commonly used incision in cardiothoracic surgery. The most serious complications considered after a sternotomy are sternal dehiscence and deep sternal wound infection, also known as mediastinitis.
